Breaking the glass songs: turning one second of a Jewish wedding into an explosion of joy

Breaking the glass is the switch from the emotion of the chuppah to the joy of the party. How to pick a song that lifts everyone and how to time it right.

After the ceremony, the blessings and the quiet moments comes breaking the glass. That second is the switch from emotion to joy, and the song that plays right after it sets the tone for everything that follows.

What makes a great glass-breaking song?

  • An immediate start. There's no time for a long intro. The song has to burst out the moment the glass breaks.
  • A song everyone knows. This is when guests of every age sing and clap together.
  • Happy energy. Not necessarily the fastest, but one that makes people smile.

Timing is everything

There's no rehearsal for breaking the glass. I keep eye contact with the groom, and the second the glass breaks the song comes in at exactly the right point, usually straight into the chorus or the drop. When the sound of the break and the music meet, the whole room feels it.

Hebrew or international?

Both work here too. Happy Israeli hits create the feeling of a family celebration, and well-known international songs bring a party feeling. Think about your crowd and what will get everyone out of their seats.

A ready-made collection

To help you choose, I prepared glass-breaking playlists in Hebrew and English in the chuppah songs collection. They're all songs I've seen work on real dance floors.
