Wedding first dance song: how to choose it and get ready for the moment

Tips for choosing your first dance song, moving smoothly from your dance to a full floor, and preparing for the moment.

Bride and groom sharing their first dance

Decided on a slow dance? Wonderful.

The first dance is one of the few moments at a wedding when every eye is on the two of you. Some couples arrive with full choreography, others simply want to dance and enjoy it in their own way. Both are wonderful, and in both the song is the foundation.

Choose a song that tells your story

It might be the song from your first date, one that reminds you of a time you shared, or simply a song you both love. As with the chuppah, read the lyrics to the end.

From your dance to a full floor

After the first two minutes of dancing on your own, it's a good idea to invite all your friends and family to join you. That way the first dance becomes the opening of the party, and when the next song kicks off the dance floor it will already be full and ready to go. If you'd rather dance the whole song on your own, feel free to skip this tip.

At least one rehearsal

If you're planning choreography, practise with the final version of the song, at the same length and tempo that will play during the dance.

For all my couples, I edit and send the finished file in advance for exactly this reason.
